Ewart Grogan became the first European to traverse the African continent
from Cape Town to Cairo at the end of the nineteenth century.
He undertook this trek in order to impress the
family of a Miss Gertrude Coleman-Watt, with whom he had fallen in love.
Although he started out with a companion - Harry
Sharp - by the time he completed his exploit in 1900 he was on his own.
The achievement had the desired effect as he and Gertrude were later married.
