Ewart LiddellAn Irish Linen Company of Donaghcloney, County Armagh. The business was formed in 1973 by a merger between William Ewart and Sons which commenced business in Belfast in 1814 and William Liddell and Company which started in Donaghcloney in 1866. They became famous at one time as the world's largest privately owned linen manufacturer, although now greatly reduced in size by the shrinkage of that entire industry. Such was the quality of their products that the company was chosen to provide the linen used on the ill-fated RMS Titanic. More recently, reproductions of these designs have been available for purchase. The old Belfast Head Office of William Ewart and Sons can be seen here. The company web site can be seen here. In January 2001 the company was acquired by Baird McNutt. Thanks to Noel S. Brien for his help with this page. |
