CafeteriasDuring the first half of the 20th century William Cannon Ewart ran several cafeterias. Four of these can be seen in this postcard, posted on 29 August 1928 from Saint Louis to West Philadelphia.
In his book "Worth the Room" author Paul Lachlan Peck tells of his experience while working as an assistant manager at the Washington D.C. cafeteria. He relates how he was dismissed from the job for daring to permit a black soldier use the facilities along with three white soldiers. Such was life in 1951. |
