The Douglas Ewart High School, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire, Scotland

There used to be two schools in Newton Stewart. One was founded by a Mr. Douglas and one by a Mr. Ewart. The school name is sometimes hyphenated as Douglas-Ewart.

It is believed that that the original founders were both involved in plantations in the West Indies and that they made their money from them. This area of Scotland was involved in the slave trade and slave ships came into Whithorn in the 18th century so it is possible there may have been a link.

There is a 1994 publication about the school by Mr. Jim McClay, a former headmaster who is an authority on the subject. (ISBN 0946280169)
